My dog won’t gain any weight, what can I do?

Posted by Eileen Salter on Mar 16, 2016 4:25:43 PM

This is a question we are asked on a continuous basis at Janry Pet Resort from pet parents who are concerned about the weight of their pups. Unless you have experienced a “picky eater” you would think that all dogs will eat just about anything that you drop on the floor.  Unfortunately for some parents this is the farthest thing from the truth.  The frustration that happens in this circumstance is so strong that many parents are spending a fortune just to see their pup eat and gain weight.  Everyone first thinks, “oh jeez, is my pet sick” so on to the vet we run, and “gulp” at the bill, frustration then hits when the vet says there is nothing wrong with your beloved family member. Strike 1.  Ok, next step, maybe they don’t like their food so we head to the pet store to see if we can find something that we think they might like.  Now if you are like me and you walk into the pet food aisle at your local pet store you feel immediately overwhelmed and want to run away.  Are there really this many types of dog food, aisles upon aisles, how do I make a decision, why are they so expensive, what if they won’t eat this dog food I just bought?  So I ask a clerk at the store and they point me in the direction of an expensive all natural dog food that they say is highly palatable and nutrient rich. Ok, don’t even get me started on reading those “guaranteed analysis” labels on the bag, I think you need a PHD to understand them. So I buy this 5lb bag for $25.00, “gulp” again, and head on home with hopefulness that they will eat it. Well guess what? Strike 2, my pup sniffed the bowl and turned away “Sorry mom not interested.” Ok should I go back to the store and try something else?  How many bags am I going to buy before I find food that my pup will like? And what if they only eat that food for a little while and I am back to scratch in a few weeks?  Tears! Then I was talking to someone at the dog park and they said that they add boiled chicken and rice to their dog’s food. Yaaaa new idea, my pup won’t be able to resist some yummy chicken and rice right? Right??? So here I go cooking for my pup and I figure I will just add it to their dog food since there is no way that it can fulfill all their nutritional requirements. Fingers Crossed!!! Nope still won’t eat, Ok that’s all right let’s just give the chicken and rice and that will kick start them into eating and then I can add the dog food.  Ok we have success!  We are eating, yaaaaaa, wait now we are walking away, noooooo!  Oh you stinker, you ate all the chicken and none of the rice!  Well I consider this a strike 3, I’m out!! Blahhhhhhhh!

Tim Prendergast, father of two Bull Terriers (Sasha & Frankie) and a Japanese Akita (Ruby), has been an amazing customer of Janry for the past 4 years, and is also an avid lover of animals.  Throughout the years, he has rescued and found forever homes for 9 homeless pets including a pig!  It was no shock to us when we received a call regarding a beautiful shepherd/lab mix, named Hershey that needed to be taken out of a possibly abusive home as soon as possible.
